The rainbow genus Pseudomugil is one of our favorate types of fish! Pseudomugils, as many rainbows, are native to Australia and new Guinea.
They are called "Australian blue eyes" because of their blue eyes. Not blue like people eyes.... blue like fish eyes. But they ARE blue.
These fish are truly a spectacle. They school together and males are constantly displaying to attract the female or compete with other males. While the female is somewhat plain, the males have impressive and somewhat geometric fins. Another hobbiest described them as looking like "butterflies" when in display. I must say that I fully agree. A Pseudomugil male in display is one of the most beautiful fish on Earth.
Because of the subtle coloration, the extended fins, small size, and their schooling nature, these fish will really bring out their best in your planted show tank!
Pseudomugils are a small fish, most species reach a maximum of 2" total length. They do require some salt in their water.
For info on proper salt rations, please see our salt guide in our "Fish Tips" section.
You have to be careful when buying Pseudomugils though. You can sometimes find them listed for very cheap, but sadly, most of these farm bred cheap ones are hybrids. It may SAY "Pseudomugil Furcatus", but it's actually a Pseudomugil hybrid. The general rule with this fish is that if it is very cheap, you don't want it. Pure, properly raised blue eyes are not cheap and they are not easy to find.
We've just listed several new species of Pseudomugils.... expected to be available very very soon! OIf you don't see what you want now, be sure to check back in a few weeks.
